What kills lice on pets?

Lice on pets are tiny, species-specific parasites that live on the skin and feed on blood or skin debris. The most effective way to kill lice is with vet-approved spot on or oral parasiticides. Common treatments include:

- Fipronil, like the Itch Flea Treatment for Cats & Dogs
- Imidacloprid
- Selamectin
- Isoxazolines

These medications kill adult lice, and many also kill eggs or remain active long enough to eliminate newly hatched lice. Medicated shampoos containing lime sulfur or pyrethrins can also help, but they often require repeated treatments.

In addition to treating your pet, wash bedding in hot water and vacuum carpets and furniture to remove stray lice or eggs. Lice are species-specific, so dog lice don’t infest cats or humans, but untreated infestations can cause itching, hair loss, and skin infections. Always consult a vet before starting treatment, especially for puppies, kittens, senior pets, or animals with health conditions, to ensure the safest and most effective product is used.
