Why won't my dog take their worming tablet?

Dogs often refuse worming tablets because of their taste, smell, size, or texture, or simply because they’ve learned to be suspicious. Luckily, there are several ways to make it easier.

  • Hide it in food: Use strong-smelling treats like cheese, peanut butter (no xylitol), or meat. Give a plain treat first, then one with the tablet hidden inside, followed by another plain treat to keep them swallowing quickly.

  • Use pill pockets: These are soft, flavoured treats designed to conceal pills and can be found at pet stores or vets.

  • Crush or split the tablet only if safe. Always check with your vet or read the label first, as some tablets must be swallowed whole for proper absorption. Itch Wormer Tablets for Cats and Itch Wormer Tablets for Dogs is safe to be crushed and sprinkled over food.

  • Try flavoured or chewable versions: Many worming tablets now come as tasty chews that dogs accept readily.

  • Give it directly: Gently tilt your dog’s head up, open their mouth, place the pill at the back of the tongue, close their mouth, and rub the throat to encourage swallowing. Reward with praise or a treat.

If your dog still refuses, ask your vet about alternative formulations such as liquids, spot-ons, or injectable options.
