Vacuuming daily definitely helps control fleas but on its own, it usually won’t completely get rid of an infestation.
What daily vacuuming does:• Removes adult fleas from carpets, rugs, and furniture• Sucks up eggs and larvae, which are often hidden deep in fibre• Stimulates dormant pupae to hatch (This is good! You want them to emerge so they can be killed)
What vacuuming doesn’t do:• Flea pupae are very tough and can survive vacuuming• Fleas can still live on pets or in untreated areas• Eggs can keep hatching over several weeks
Fleas have a life cycle and vacuuming only hits some stages. That’s why infestations often seem to “come back” even if you’re cleaning daily. Vacuum alongside treating your pet and using a household flea spray - Make sure to use treatments that target flea eggs so you fully break the flea life cycle.
Even with everything done right, it can take 2–4 weeks to fully break the cycle and sometimes longer for heavy infestations.
Use vacuuming as part of a bigger plan:
1. Vacuum daily
Focus on carpets, sofas, skirting boards, and pet areas
Empty the vacuum outside immediately
2. Treat pets
Use vet-recommended flea treatments like Itch's dog flea treatment and cat flea treatment
Opt for a treatment that targets flea eggs otherwise fleas will keep reproducing
3. Wash fabrics
Bedding, throws, pet beds at 60°C+
Steam clean any furnishings that can't be washed
4. Use a home treatment
Flea sprays or foggers for carpets and furniture
Look for ones that include an insect growth regulator (IGR), like Itch's home flea spray
